A SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE WILL BEGIN AT 1:30 PM, FOLLOWED BY MILITARY HONORS AT THE TOWN OF ESOPUS AMERICAN LEGION POST 1298 VETERANS MEMORIAL MONUMENT AT 2:00 PM
Edwin J. Longendyke, 73,of Lucas Ave. Ext., Cottekill went home to play in the "big band" on Tuesday, September 26th, 2017 from his home following a brief illness.
Eddie was born in Kingston, NY on April 14th, 1944, a son of the late John and Aletha (Delavan) Longendyke and was raised in Sleightsburgh, Town of Esopus along with his twelve siblings.
A veteran of the US Navy, he was employed by IBM, NYS Dept. of Transportation, and with the Office of Congressman Matthew F. McHugh.
Most paramount in Eddie's life, he was an accomplished musician and singer. At 14, he learned playing the guitar using records at slow speed to learn songs. For several decades, he played guitar and sang in several bands including Sundown, Country Skyline and Arizona. Most recently, along with nephew Steve, Eddie would visit The Emerson in Mt. Tremper for "Open Mike", where performers would gather and play to the audience.
In 2016, he lost the love of his life of 44 years, Sharon Jean (DeBrosky) Longendyke.
He is survived by his four siblings, Aletha Sulko of Tillson, Rawlson of Kingston, Richard of Saugerties, and David Longendyke of Port Ewen, his niece and caregiver, Laura Sulko of Tillson and her companion David Peterson, nephew and student musician, Steve Sulko of Samsonville, and a host nieces, nephews and dear friends.
In addition to his wife, he is also predeceased by seven siblings, Dolores, Mary, John, Raymond, Robert, Shirley, and George.
The family has entrusted the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park, Town of Esopus, with the care and cremation service arrangements for Eddie.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Eddie's memory to: UCSPCA, 20 Wiedy Rd, Kingston, NY 12401.
