Obituary for William Thomas "Bill" Devine

William Thomas "Bill"  Devine
William Thomas Devine, 76, of Lindorf Street, Ulster Park passed away at home while in the comforting presence of his family on Thursday, September 14th, 2017.

Bill was born in Cornwall, NY on October 13th, 1940, a son of the late Thomas and Winifred (Scully) Devine.

He is a graduate of Brown Preparatory School in Philadelphia, received his Associates degree from Orange County Community College, Undergraduate in electrical engineering from The University of Michigan in Dearborn Center and his Master's Degree in electrical engineering from Syracuse University.

On December 23, 1962, he married the love of his life Mary "Pat" (Hess) Devine who he met at a high school dance in their former residence of Orange County.

Bill was employed as an electrical engineer with IBM for over 42 years. He was in Research and Development, and was issued several US patents during his tenure at IBM Corp. He earned several awards during his employment.

He was very active in the Esopus community, including as a member of the Town of Esopus Planning Board, serving as chairman for several years, the Town of Esopus Little League, and the Boy Scouts (Webelos).

Bill loved to fish and work in his yard, gardening and landscaping.

A past member of St. Peter's Church Holy Name Society, he was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Esopus.

In addition to his wife Pat, he is survived by four children, Debbie Barton, and her husband Richard, of Rifton, John Devine, and his wife Gail, of Braintree, Mass., Stacy Lines, and her husband Barry, of Hanover, Mass., Thomas Devine, and his wife Kristen, of Rifton, one brother, John Devine, and his wife Roselle, of Vero Beach, Fla, six grandchildren who he absolutely adored, Richard Barton, and his wife Megan, of Syracuse, William Barton of Rifton, Jillian and Jack Devine of Braintree, Mass, Benjamin and Taylor Lines of Hanover, Mass, and one great-grandson, Bailey Thomas-Barton of Syracuse.

He is predeceased by one brother, Joseph Devine.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 17th, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park, Town of Esopus.

The funeral procession will form 9:00 am Monday from the funeral home, thence to Sacred Heart Church, 1055 Broadway, Esopus, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am, Rev. Eugene J. Grohe, celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
