BAK is a coalition of business leaders from the three business districts working together to further develop the economic vitality of the City of Kingston while celebrating each individual district's unique character. In 2009, the Business Alliance of Kingston hired the City of Kingston's first Main Street Manager. Using the Main Street Four Point approach a series of initiatives were put in place: The Four Points are: ◾Design – enhancing the commercial district’s physical environment by capitalizing on its best assets, such as historic buildings, and creating an inviting atmosphere through attractive window displays, parking areas, building improvements, streetscapes, and landscaping. ◾Economic Restructuring – By helping existing businesses expand and recruiting new ones to respond to today’s market, the Main Street program helps to convert unused space into productive property and sharpen the competitiveness of business enterprises. ◾Promotion – marketing the commercial district’s unique characteristics to residents, visitors,investors, and business owners. ◾Organization – involving all the commercial district’s stakeholders, getting everyone working towards a common goal, and driving the volunteer-based Main Street program. |

At that time, a group of business owners who belonged to an organization called the Business Men of the Rondout, met to form a “permanent” organization. They decided the new organization would be called The Chamber of Commerce of the City of Kingston. Officers elected at this meeting were: I.M. Weiner, President; P.A. Canfield, 1st VP; W.F. Rafferty, 2nd VP; J.J. Johnson, Treasurer and E.F. Mac Fadden, Secretary. Other notable business leaders at that first meeting were E. Hiltebrant, H.E. Wieber, H.C. Connelly, Jr., John W. Heaney, along with Messrs Alliger, Stern, M.B. Myers and Bacharach. Annual dues were set at $1! Among the first order of business was to find a downtown location for the Fuller Shirt Factory. Organization records beyond this time frame became sketchy at best. |

We operate out of two stations and cover about seven square miles of territory. Our district is about ten miles from end to end. This is a mostly residential and rural area, with some religeous facilities, one large manufacturing complex, and many home businesses. The east central part of the district is occupied by "Snake Hill" and the south east corner by Shaupeneak mountain. The New York Central Railroad is our eastern boundry and the Rondout Creek makes up our northern and western boundries. |

In 1811 this area officially became the Town of Esopus (ee-SO-pus). We are beautifully situated on the west banks of the majestic Hudson River, nearly 100 miles North of New York City. Our Town is bounded on the North by the Roundout Creek, a waterway busy with commercial and pleasure craft, across which lies the City of Kingston. To the South is Highland in the Town of Lloyd, and to the West are the towns of Rosendale and New Paltz. The Town of Esopus covers 40 square miles, much of which remains naturally decorated by lakes, waterways, and lush woodlands. In addition to the Hudson and Walkill Rivers, the Rondout, Black, and Swartekill Creeks wind through the Town...but not the Esopus Creek! Our population is roughly 9500 strong, and has included such notables as naturalist John Burroughs and human rights advocate Sojourner Truth. Several hamlets make up the Town of Esopus including Connelly, Esopus, New Salem, our Town center Port Ewen, Rifton, St. Remy, Sleightsburgh, Ulster Park, Union Center, and West Park. | 50 Rondout Landing Kingston NY 12401 Phone: 845 338-0071 Fax: 845 338-0583 Website: http://www.hrmm.org/contact-us/ Email: info@hrmm.org The Hudson River Maritime Museum was founded in 1980 by steamboat and tugboat enthusiasts, as well as local citizens who wanted to preserve the shipping history of the Hudson River. Kingston’s role as the most important port between New York and Albany in the 19th century made it the logical place to establish a Hudson River maritime museum. Kingston/Rondout was the terminus of the Delaware & Hudson Canal which brought anthracite coal from eastern Pennsylvania from 1828 to 1898 to be transported on the Hudson River to New York City and other ports at a time when coal was the dominant fuel in use. Kingston was also an important stop for passenger steamboats bringing vacationers to the area, many of whom traveled on to the Catskills. In addition, Rondout Creek was the home of the Cornell Steamboat Company tugboat fleet, the dominant towing company on the Hudson from 1880 to the 1930s, a time when much freight was transported by boat. After acquiring property and a building on the Rondout Creek just off the Hudson, the founders, Board, staff, and volunteers began the process of creating a museum with collections, exhibits, and programs which has continued and expanded to this day. |

Since its founding, FHK has led preservation efforts in the City of Kingston. 1969 A Landmark Through FHK’s advocacy and groundwork, the City of Kingston established the Historic Landmarks Preservation Commission. As the result of research and sponsorship by FHK, the first of Kingston’s four Historic Districts – the Stockade National Historic District – was designated. |
